How Many Sprinklers Can Be Used per Zone
A yard sprinkler system is vital for the growth of a healthy garden and to maintain a lush landscape. Manually watering a garden is often not feasible, especially when you have a large lawn to cover and various plant species that need to be watered in a specific way. A sprinkler system design can save you time and hassle. However, before you invest in one, you first need to understand the basic concept and their functions.
In order for you to determine how many heads you need per zone,
you need to know what your water pressure and flow rate are. At different pressures, a sprinkler head and nozzle will use different amounts of water. For instance, at 35 pounds a square inch the 5000 Series Rotor that uses a 3.0 nozzle will use 3.11 gallons a minute. So if your home’s water capacity is 10 GPM, you can use 3 heads per zone.
For a basic assessment of what your pressure and flow conditions are you need to:
Check the water pressure:
-
Install a pressure gauge on the nearest faucet to your water meter. Make sure that there is no other water is running anywhere in your home. Switch on the faucet with the gauge attached, this will show you the water pressure in pounds per square inch, or, you can contact your local water company to find out what your water pressure is.
Measuring your home’s water capacity or flow:
-
Use a measurable container, such as a 5-gallon bucket, and, again, make sure no other water is being used in your house. Then, switch on the faucet full and time how long it takes to fill up the container. The flow rate will be in gallons per minute which is: 300, this is 5 gallons x 60 seconds in a minute, which is then divided by the number of seconds it took to fill the container.
